Chain Notes

Short description

Students pass around an envelope on which the teacher has written one question about the class. When the envelope reaches a student he/she spends a moment to respond to the question and then places the response in the envelope.

Process description

  1. Compose a question that will capture a moment of each student's mental activity as they answer the question.
  2. Determine that the question can be answered quickly, is focused, and is unambiguous.
  3. Print the question and directions for responding on a large manila envelope.
  4. At the start of class, provide students with 3x5 cards or slips of paper while describing the exercise.
  5. When the sudents' understand the exercise, start the envelope on its way

Videotape the class session while the envelope is circulating. Ask students to indicate the exact time they answer the question. Watch the videotape and write your own chain notes in reaction to it. Compare your notes to the student responses and observe for patterns of attention in the classroom.
